Your insight is so true, who can compete with the supernatural? Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by.Elizabeth Meyettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15876378937432391881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3542787416269096159.post-34812455590846927952013-10-09T10:41:11.075-04:002013-10-09T10:41:11.075-04:00Beautiful poems.Beautiful poems.Brenna Chasehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10265076562202518459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3542787416269096159.post-10779782973881031812013-10-09T09:08:25.041-04:002013-10-09T09:08:25.041-04:00Hello Larry Levy,
Good strong stuff, that is, and...Hello Larry Levy,
Good strong stuff, that is, and it's certainly interesting to read how you work. I do wish I could have had a teacher like you.
There is, however, an aspect to these stories you don't mention (probably because it would need much more space) and that is, the degree of sentimental perfection the dead achieve (a perfection that could probably fall into Saul Bellow's category of Potato Love.)
The beautiful poet in the damp garden in Joyce's story is such a romantic, untouchable ghost, simply because he is dead. Such an immutable image contrasts sharply with the normal banal existence of the story's middle class couple. And that is the crux of the problem: a husband who suddenly finds himself confronted by his wife's fantasy lover, a man who can never age badly, become superficial and write dreadful claptrap.
This perfection also appears when your young man dies on a battlefield. All praise him, mourn the lost potential. Battlefield deaths are certainly a tragedy, but we shouldn't forget that the dream of this sporting youth was to enlist, go kill unknown people in that number one all-time hero-sport: war.
Best regards and thanks to you and Betty.J.
